topic Camcorder GL2A in Camcorders

I recently found two GL2A camcorders in a cabinet at my church. This technology, from what I have gathered on line, ,is over 20 years old but is still in use. I am able to record video on the DV tape but I cannot get the view finder or the LCD screen to show anything while I am recording. So basically I am unable to set up the shot and can only tell what is in the shot by filming a bit and playing back. I am able to view and hear my video on the LCD screen in playback mode so I guess it is working. If anyone has some idea of what might be causing this problem I would really appreciate hearing from you. I have read the entire owners manual and cant figure out what I might be doing wrong. Thank you.
