The good news:

Hooked up a passive audio mixer to the camera earlier this week.

Two discoveries to report back:

a) A passive mixer works just fine with the Vixia.

b) By outputting in stereo mode both connected mics will be recorded separately. Or rather onto one stereo channel with two tracks that can separated in post production (to edit the level of each microphone separately).

If an audio input offers two channels (say, a dual wireless system) then ... is it possible to capture these separately into the Vixia HF R800. Or is everything ultimately mixed down into one track?

Hi danielrosehill,

Thanks for checking in with us.

The VIXIA HF R800 camcorder is not designed to record separate audio channels from different external mic sources.
