Spend the $1200(CAD) on a sigma art lens for SL3 or trade SL3 for Canon RP/R10

I take portraits mostly. I have an 85mm 1.8 and a nifty fifty. Would it be silly to spend double my body’s worth vs just upgrading to a mirrorless now? I wouldn’t be able to get new mirrorless lenses for a while, just get by with a kit lens.

Upgrading to an R series camera kit makes more sense, to me. I recommend looking into the R50 camera kit with a RF lens. You could purchase a Canon RF-EF mount adapter and continue using your current lenses.

I have no idea which lenses you refer to but I can tell you there aren't many lenses that are better than the Sigma Art trio of their 35mm, 50mm and 85mm Art series. Have you looked at the Canon EOS R50 Mirrorless Camera with 18-45mm and 55-210mm Lenses kit? It is less than the Sigma Art lens alone. Keep your SL3 for backup duty.

I like the body upgrade suggestion too. Since you primarily shoot portraits, I would look at the R8.

Take a look at Canon refurbished

Here's an opportunity for you to grit a new camera at a reduced price with the same 1-year warranty as brand new. You might be able to find an EF to EOS R adapter refurbished as well. .

I just sold my EF 85 f1.8... Such a sharp lens. Remarkable and beautiful bokeh for portraits. Budget friendly too.

Between the R10 and RP.... I would choose the R10. However, based on your photography, a full frame body will serve you better. The R8 does cost a little bit more than the RP but it is vastly superior from a feature set standpoint. Like the RP it's weather sealed. It's also similar in size to your SL3. The R8 is 4 years newer than the EOS RP. Although battery performance between the two is about the same, the R8 has all of the modern AF and ISO capability the RP lacks. It's LCD is much nicer as well.
