Hello,

I may have an opportunity to photograph pro wrestling but from a media area in the stands. Near hard cam. Light should be good near the ring but I’ll need a lens with around 200mm capabilities. So around a 70-200mm lens. Probably a 2.8. I currently have an R6. Is there anything for $1000 or (much) less, maybe around $700(?). I’ll even take used and EF since I already have an adapter. I don’t mind 3rd party since my Tamron 24-70mm works awesome!

Note not all 3rd Party lenses are compatible. Many of which are NOT FULLY COMPATIBLE with the highly advanced AF system found in the EOS R series. Many of which use slow AF Motors are not capable of 12 fps shooting. Often a common problem is 3rd Party lens’ IS will fight the IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization) in the camera body. Telephoto lenses start off around 1K. The lowest I can find used is $900. Note often older EF lenses aren’t fully compatible either. Only the newest version of EF lenses will be fully compatible. For what you’re doing IS is definitely going to be needed. Lenses without IS will be cheaper at the cost of no IS. Then dealing with shaky images. The IBIS system in the camera can only help some much with older EF lenses that don’t have lens based IS. Combining and IS lens with IBIS will give you more stops of stabilization. But it depends on the EF and how stabilization it can provide. The newest lenses provide more stabilization than older IS lenses especially 1st gen IS lenses.

Since you own the EOS R6 it’s best to look into RF lenses. Who knows how long EF lenses will be supported by Canon. Or the 3rd Party manufacturer. I would recommend saving up more money for the RF versions. Canon has 2 different RF versions of that lens. They have the newly released internal zoom and the older external zoom versions. If you have to go EF look into the Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 version II IS lens.

theperfectplex,

I don't know where to start because some of the info you see above isn't correct or it is misleading. I will say you are always better off sticking with a Canon RF lens. Where it gets confusing or misleading is in how much compatibility off brand lenses have with an R6. A lot of the AF capabilities of the R6 are not needed all the time. And any recent off brand lens is going to be able to AF. You would have to go pretty far back to find a lens that doesn't work at all. You in a static position shooting a wrestling match probably doesn't need super AF ability. After all we used to do that with cameras and lenses that never had AF.

Again buy a Canon RF 70-200mm f2.8L. always the best choice, if money allows but either the Sigma or preferably the Tamron G2 models will work. I will suggest you get the Canon brand EF-RF adapter if you do get a off brand lens. Don't buy an off brand adapter.

Remember, off brand lense are designed to work on Canon cameras but they are not designed by Canon to do so. Make sure you shoot raw and you get DPP4 form the Canon website.

Don't feel too bad buying an EF lens, especially if you can get some warranty with it. An old lens is better than none right? I use a very old EF70-200/2.8 on an R10 and it works well

I suggest visiting reputable used camera gear dealers to see what Canon EF 70-200mm lenses are available. I have used KEH and B&H. Other dealers I have not used are MPB and Lens Rental.
