The 56mm would have a 90mm equivalent FOV. I am not sure why 72 is "awkward".

What other lenses do you have?

These lenses are probably so similar that it doesn't matter which one you buy. I would go for the Canon, myself.

Here is Rockwell's review with some sample images:

https://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/45mm-f12.htm

What kinds of pictures do you want to take? A zoom is much more versatile.

Greetings,

It would be helpful if you tell us what other lenses you have as my colleague asked?

Both of the lenses you are considering have a constant aperture, so from that standpoint both will perform about the same (from a light gathering ability standpoint) as they are very close to each other.

Where they will differ is field of view. The Canon RF 45 mm is intended for full frame. It will give an equivalent field of view of 72 mm which can be somewhat awkward. The sigma 56mm is intended for APS-C (your camera). Both of these lenses on your camera would be best suited for portraiture. Unless this is your intended use, they may be limiting in some respects.

Given your experience, just asking us which lens is "better" is probably not going to give you the answer that you're looking for. We need to have a better understanding of the type of photography you're looking to do, as well as any lenses you may currently own.

I agree. Both are "bad" unless he's looking to do portraiture. They're nice lenses and all, but they have more limited use cases. For someone just starting out these are probably not the first lenses I would recommend.

The simple answer is to always stick with Canon for a Canon camera. The focal lengths are pretty close but for a GP lens the wider I.E., the 45mm will be more friendly to use. Personally I wouldn't buy either since there are many better options. My advice is to never buy a prime lens unless you have a specific need for a prime lens.
