EOS R or R8?

I have the opportunity today to buy either a used EOS R (approx 8k shutter) for $700

A new R8 for 1k total.

Family vacation photos/videos. Talking head for work. Light vlogging.

Which one would you be jumping on?

The R8 has the more advanced features, including the Digic X II processor and Dual Pixel AF II, just off the top of my head. It gives up a few MP, 24 vs the R's 30, but that shouldn't be a deal breaker. I've used both, but don't own either. TBH, the original R is what scared me away from the R series cameras for several years until I finally bought the R6. For some reason, the EVF of the R gave me a headache, which I suspect was it's funky refresh rate. So I may not be the best source, LOL! The newer R series cameras have a smoother EVF refresh rate, although a bit of lag which is hardly noticeable, still smooth as silk.

I noticed you said you can get the R8 for $1000. Is that new or used or refurbished. If new, be careful as that camera is on sale , new from Canon, for $1200. So if you found it new for a grand, it could be gray market... Just be careful 🙂

Greetings all of Newton's observations and suggestions are correct. The EVFs refresh rate on the R Is not as good as the R8. Video on the R is cropped and is not unlimited. It has a touch bar. Canon has never done this again. It's AF and subject tracking is 7 years old. I was out last weekend and ended up holding an R8 and an EOS R. I did prefer the size and heft of the EOS R. The R8 is truly a compact, lightweight body. Stronger overall, the R8 is a more advanced body from a feature perspective and investment standpoint.

I have an R8 and genuinely love it. Buy from a reputable seller like B&H Photo etc. so that you have the Canon USA model rather than a gray market model for less. As for R versus R8, the R is 7 years old and the R8 is roughly 5-6 years newer. I'd go with the new camera for $1200, but if that does not fit the budget, offer the seller $350. The R isn't old enough to be collectible but it is old enough to be outdated. The seller may want $700, but the depreciation is another story. Play hardball.
