EOS R6 Mark iii speed light and hotshoe questions

Hi-

I recently purchased the new EOS R6 Mark iii and am looking to purchase an off camera flash / speed light. Since the EOS R6 Mark iii has a new hotshoe design, I am looking for recommendations. I have heard that there have been issues with compatible wireless transmitters not fitting securely in the hotshoe due to the new design. I have seen that there is an adapter, but it looks to be out of stock everywhere. Does anyone have experience with a transmitter that works well? I am looking at purchasing a godox or westcott. Thank you!

What are you looking for exactly in a flash system. Since the EOS R6 Mark III is new who knows the compatibility status with 3rd Party flash systems. Even if it was compatible there is a risk of it being incompatible later if there is a camera firmware update later. Only Canon knows its flash protocols its not licensed out to any 3rd Party flash manufacturer.

Thank you for your response. I am looking for an off camera flash to use for indoor headshots, indoor/outdoor standard portraits and portraits where I would need to “freeze motion” such as catching water droplets mid air (if that makes sense)

Freezing motion usually requires a fast SS and HSS. Now for indoor work HSS usually isn't needed. Have you looked into Canon's offerings. There is no guarantee for compatibility when it comes to 3rd Party gear. One major issue with 3rd Party flashes is they cause banding at high SS. But a Canon speedlite has no such problems.

The Canon Speedlite EL-10 is a great option but some other higher power options such as the EL-5 & EL-1 Version 2 are higher power speedlites. The EL-1 Version 2 uses the older hot shoe. But for most people's needs it not necessary and I'd look at the EL-10 or EL-5. The EL-1 Version 2 & EL-5 have the same guide number of 60 meters. The EL-10 has less power at a guide number of 42 meters. Now for transmitters Canon offers the ST-E10 which doesn't require batteries and uses the camera's power to power the device. Or the older ST-E3-RT Version 3 which uses the older hot shoe and requires batteries. Just know the slower the lens aperture the more flash power is required. Also HSS requires more power thus reducing guide number. This is because the speedlite now has to pulse to avoid the shutter curtains being visible in the picture.
