2x Converter Recommendations

Hello, I have a canon T7i. Have a Tamron 18-270 lens on it. Looking to buy a 2X converter to double the lens capacity. What canon converter do you recommend. Heading to Africa and and want to maximize my chances of capturing great wildlife shots.

We do not support third-party lenses in the Canon Community. If you need help with your non-Canon lens, you should contact the manufacturer of your lens to determine their recommended course of action.

Personally, I do not recommend buying a TC to use with this lens.

Things to consider.

You will lose one stop of light using a 1.4x TC and two stops using a 2.0x TC. The maximum aperture at 270mm is 6.3 taking you to f7.1 with a 1.4x and f9 with a 2.0x TC. It's unlikely autofocus will function. You'll also experience some loss in IQ. You'd be better off buying a lens with longer reach like the Sigma 60-600, 150-600 or the Tamron 150-600 G2. All of these lenses can be had used at very reasonable prices.

The AF will definitely not function, if you try to use a teleconverter with that [lens] combo and any Rebel camera body.

Just get a sigma or Tamron 150-600 and call it a day.

Do not try a 2x tel-con on any lens especially one like the Tamron 18-270. They simply have too many downsides and on a lower quality lens that will be even worse.

I agree with the others, buy one of the 150-600 mm zooms, you will have a MUCH better setup that will actually capture some good photos! I bought a Sigma 150-600mm for use on hiking trips where I didn't want to carry any of my large heavy Canon "great white" lenses and I was amazed at the price/performance ratio for the Sigma 150-600. It doesn't perform as well as my Canon primes but it costs a small fraction of what a couple of my Canon primes cost and the weight is also a fraction of those lenses. It performs better than it ought to for the price 🙂

You need to try the Tamron G2 model. It is another notch better than the Sigma C.
