9 times out of 10 the zoom is going to be the best choice and in this case it still probably true. However, without seeing the venue and exact conditions I can't say that with 100% certainty. If you had instead compared the 24-70mm f2.8L vs the 35mil, I would say with 100% certainly the zoom is not on the best choice but the only choice. You give up way too much versatility comparing a zoom to a prime for one single advantage like two stops. Although as I mentioned without seeing the actual event, two stops may make or break a shot.

If I was faced with that choice I would look at the ef 24-70mm f2.8L and buy it today.

hey everyone, I’ve got a question about choosing a new lens. I’m shooting with a Canon 5D Mark IV and need something suitable for nightclub work — both photo and video. lighting isn’t really an issue since I use a flash for photos and a steady light for video. my main concern is autofocus performance: does the 24–105mm struggle to focus in low light, or is it reliable enough for this kind of environment or should i opt for the 35mm f/2.0?

Greetings,

AF performance will be largely influenced by subject illumination In this type of shooting scenario. A flash will only be effective to about 12 ft. A video light to about 10 ft

The max aperture of the lens is important for exposure even with a flash or light, but focal length is also important depending on your scene or subjects. Are you trying to capture images of individuals, small groups or an entire scene. There's only one stop of light difference between f2 and f4. Since the 24-105 is a constant aperture lens, you can shoot at any focal length at f4. For versatility, I'd probably go for the 24-105.

In defence of the 35mm on a FF camera like the 5D Mk IV, I can wholeheartedly say it is a marriage made in heaven. I love a 35mill on a FF. I have the Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art on my 1DX and it is fantastic it just might be the sharpest lens made, period. I consider it to be the best 35mm of any made today. It seems 35mm must be an easy FL to get right because there are several very good ones on the market. But that said i stil would choose a top draw zoom over it for work like you queried about.
