Hello my names Mark and I bought my wife the cannon eos rebel t7 camera for Christmas? My son plays youth football and I was going to try to use it to record the games from the stands. I’m new to cameras and would like to know if anyone had any suggestions on the best lense to use to video record the games. thank you

First before anyone can recommend gear for your task at hand, we need to know what you expect. Do you want ESPN quality or iPhone quality? Somewhere in between perhaps. Video and even stills from the bleachers is a tall order if anything resembling good quality is wanted. If you don't know what you want and expect, I would go to a game and use your iPhone to video or shoot stills either your choice and just see if and if there is something satisfactory in it.

If you are OK with what you get don't waste the money on lenses and tripods or monopods for the T7. Actually a iPhone from the stands can do a pretty good job of just recording the event happened. They have zoom and WA features plus some others.

However, if you want something more, something that shows your son playing the game come back and I can give you some suggestions on how to get that. Warning it will not be cheap but that kind of photography is never cheap.

Greetings,

For the T7, the best results will be achieved outdoors during the day. Your lens will play a big role in the footage you will be able to capture.

**I started composing this reply before others started replying. Can you tell us how much detail you are looking to capture? General game play, more one to one play action, etc. What will be the approximate distance to the playing field? Also, do you have a budget? You are going to need a zoom lens for this undertaking.

Lenses I might recommend are the following.

EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS L

EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS II USM

EF 100-400 f4-5.6 L

Sigma or Tamron EF 150-600 f5-6.3 Contemporary or Sports

Sigma 60-600 f5-6.3 Sports

The last 3 would allow you to zoom in a little more closely to capture individual action. This is also dictated by your distance to the playing field. I would also recommend a tripod. Our recommendations may change slightly based on your answers to the above questions.
