Hi Brian

Took delivery today of this lens today and took it for a walk around my local lanes. First impressions were excellent. It’s so versatile and I went from close ups of flowers in the hedgerow, to wider shots of landscape and everything in between. I got a renewed version off amazon, so didn’t spend a fortune. So thanks for your advice.

Wide angle lens specifications: Recos for better wide-angle zoom lenses

Hi folks

I've had an EOS90D for over 18months and unsurprisingly a growing number of lenses. I have one wide angle an EFS 10-18mm which is great for my hobby of shooting railways (trains and buildings).

Yesterday I was shooting the Harry Potter train on the Glenfinnan Viaduct and chose this lens - but while getting some great shots of the whole vista, my ability to zoom in was limited.

So if I want to get another wide angle witb more zoom, what are the specifications I should be considering? Or just straight forwards - tell me what you recommend. Though, I would like to understand the specification.

Thanks from a Sunny Scotland

What’s your budget? That will help determine what gets recommended by the generous experts here who are far more knowledgeable and experienced than I am. And what other lenses do you currently own?

Scottish Highlands . That's a beautiful train. A fellow colleague, @AtticusLake lives in Scotland. I've seen pictures of that train in some of his backgrounds. Not sure if they were pictures or videos. He primarily shoots video. The bridges and trestles (viaducts) that train travels on are magnificent.

When I shot aps-c, one of my favorite lenses was the Canon EF-S 18-135. I also enjoyed a Sigma 17-70. The Canon comes in a few variants. I would choose the USM version.

I would suggest you look for an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM as it's a great range for a lot of photography, and would sit nicely beyond your EF-S 10-18mm lens. Take care with choosing though, and there are several versions of the EF-S 18-135mm lens, so make sure the one you choose is the USM version if possible. Second choice would be the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM. Neither lens is still in production, so you will need to find either a used one or new one that a dealer has still in their stock. In the UK try the various online dealers for used lenses such as MPB and Wex.

I agree with the others above but if you want the best lens made for a 90D look at the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens. At this point in my life few camera/lens combo blow me away but that one did and still does. I didn't then and I don't now think there is any better combo made. Just my 2 cents and worth every penny.

Ramden,

Congratulations on the new lens. If you haven't done so already, perhaps you should get a lens hood for it. My recommendation(s) would be:

Canon Lens Hood EW-73D or;

JJC Lens Hood LH-73D

Unless you can find a used Canon lens hood at a reasonable price (that hasn't had a hacksaw taken to it) I would think the JJC lens hood would work just fine.

Regards,

Thanks LZ

I'm on the case. That was the first job + getting the correct.

I also took delivery of 4 new hoods yesterday following my post on lens hoods. All good now and no 'encroachment' or hacksaws to be seen.

Cheers
