topic 5D Mark IV, or EOS R? in Gear Guide

Hello all, I'm from the UK and I'm looking at an upgrade from my Canon 800D in the ~£700 mark and both the 5d 4 and the R are in this price bubble. I mainly use the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM, so I wanted to know what people thought would be better, or if there was other recommendations for a full Frame camera under £800 used.

Thank you 🙂

The EOS R series has future support if needed. While the EOS 5D Mark IV is a great camera. Support for DSLRs are on a decline. So is support for EF lenses too. The EOS R series has support for the foreseeable future. DSLR development is over so is DSLR lens development.

Re: 5D Mark IV, or EOS R?

First a bit of background; EOS 5D Mark IV is probably the best general purpose all-round DSLR camera that Canon produced. I truly loved mine and it was a sad day when I moved it on. I also owned the EOS R, it was my first Canon mirrorless and I was not a fan at the start, but came to appreciate its skills over time. Though for me it never felt as capable as the EOS 5D Mark IV.

So yes I have extensive experience with both cameras. Right now it's hard not to recommend a mirrorless camera, but actually I'm still a little wary of recommending the EOS R without knowing what kind of photography you want to do. For general portraits, events, landscapes, macro then it's the EOS R you should choose, but if you want to attempt sports, action, wildlife then it's much harder to recommend the EOS R over the EOS 5D Mark IV.

I might be tempted to suggest the EOS RP as another camera to consider, it's still full-frame and would suit the same kind of photography as the EOS R, but is also a little less in price - certainly at MPB.

One last idea would be to seek out an EOS R6, it's a little above your budget, but if you can stretch to this level then I'd pick the EOS R6 over them all. It's a hugely capable camera in low light, action, portrait, wildlife, landscape just about anything you might want to do. Your EF lens will work fine on the EOS R-series camera though it is best to get the Canon lens adapter, not a third party one.

So ultimately your photography subjects will determine if EOS R or EOS 5D Mark IV, but if the budget can be increased then EOS R6 is the clear choice.
