I have installed the Canon print inkjet/selphy app on my iphone and it recognizes the printer, but when trying to print, it is unable to communicate to the printer. WIFI is connected. any suggestions?

Are both the printer and the iPad connected to the same wi-fi network?

Try to completely uninstall the Canon PRINT app from your phone, and make sure to clear all of the app data as well. Install the newest version from the App Store. Once you've done that, give it another go.
