Welcome Lee!
What can't you "open" exactly?

Hi Lee,
I'm sorry to hear of the difficulty you've encountered with your PowerShot A40.
If, by "open", you mean you're unable to turn your camera on, please ensure that the batteries are inserted correctly, as shown on page 12 of the PowerShot A40 Manual. The outer batteries should have the positive side of the battery (the flat side) pointed out of the camera, and the inner batteries should have the negative ("button" side) pointed outside of the camera, when the battery door is open.
For the best results, we recommend using rechargeable (NiMH)batteries with a power rating of at least 2500 milliamp hours (MAH). More is better still.. Rechargeable batteries provide the best performance and are the most economical choice.
AA alkaline batteries such as those from Energizer or Duracell will provide the best performance for non-rechargeable batteries.
