I have an 80D but iPhoto, Lightroom 5 & Photoshop won't import the RAW files (CR2)

I just bought n 80D and was excited with the possibility of processing RAW files (CR2) but all my photo programs won't import the files since they are not recognized. iPhoto, Photoshop, and Lightroom 5.  I am running Maverick on my Mac.  Weird thing though, Image Capture will import them. Any suggestions?

The 80D is a bit too new.  It's normal for the camera RAW updates to lag a few months behind.

I see that Adobe only supports your camera if you upgrade to Lightroom CC.  See:  http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2016/03/camera-raw-9-5-now-available.html

As for Apple, you can see a big difference between the updates for Mavericks:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201071

vs. the updates for El Capitan (Mavericks is two full releases behind):

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205272

Although Apple hasn't released the Digital Camera RAW Update for the 80D yet, I'm fairly confident you'll find that you need to upgrade to El Capitan to get it.  BTW, OS updates are free from Apple.  Just launch your "App Store" app and check the updates and you should see it indicating that there's an OS update available for you.  (Apple stopped selling the OS updates several years ago.)

You need to get the latest upgrades. Adobe should support it wiht Camera RAW 9.5. Apple does not yet support the 80D raws, but I am afraid that you might need EL Capitan to use Apple RAW support when it is released.

Thank you, kvbarkley, for your answer.  I appreciate it.

This can be a problem if you're using older Adobe programs like CS6 and LR5 or older since Adobe recently stops supporting Adobe RAW updates for newer cameras for older software.

You have a choice to upgrade to Photoshop/LR cc or you can do a couple of work-arounds:

1. Use Canon DPP to open the CR2 then convert it to something  Photoshop/LR can read such as TIFF - This option is "painful" - labor intensive and taking up a lot of disk space.

2.  Download the Adobe DNG converter and convert the CR2 files into DNG files which are recognized by older PS/LR software.  DNG files are the Adobe format RAW files.  Once you have the DNG converter, all you have to do is to use Adobe photo import and select the DNG option, the importer will automatically convert your CR2 to DNG for you.

Hi, diverhank, thank you for  your help.  I did download the converter and am in the process of converting the raw files to dng.  But the files are almost two times the size of the RAW files.  Is it because I embedded the original RAW data with them?  Is that necessary to do or should I start again and not embed the RAW info?

Yes...if you choose the option to imbed the cr2 file it will be large. I would recommend you save the cr2 separately for later use and convert to dng without embedding for use with Photoshop and Lightroom.  The dng file will be smaller and without the extra XML files.

In the last 4 days something has changed within the MacBook or Canon 80D and my files are no longer transferable, for the same reason. On Monday I took some great files, got home, transfered them via the SDHC port on the Mac and went straight into Lightroom 5 to look and watermark my photos. Now Friday, I've done exactly the same and they won't view etc. Does anyone know what has changed?

What did you do to change something? Did you install anything?

It is probably a safe bet that nothing in the camera's firmware has changed.  Did the MAC do an automatic update?  I suggest that you update your Adobe Camera Raw.
