How do I upload pics from my Canon Rebel T5 to my MacBook Pro OS X Yosemite?

It keeps importing to the iPhotos and will not allow me to easily drag/drop to the desktop...not that I want to do that anyway considering the quality of the image will devalue. Please help! I have done it before...but it was quite the process and I cannot seem to remember how. THANKS!!!
