There are a few things that "click" when you take an exposure.  The loudest thing contributing to the "click" is the "mirror slap" of the reflex mirror swinging up to clear the image path and then back down after the image is captured.

The shutter itself makes noise, but not as much as the mirror.

Several newer models have a near-silent shutter mode (they slow down the speed of the mirror so that it doesn't make the loud slap -- you do still hear the actual shutter itself, but that's not very noisy.)

Thank you Tim.

I was hoping for a magic solution that did not require a new camera. Your answer was informative and I at least know why the loud clicks. I was able to photograph some heron today tht were at a great distance and was able to click away undetected. Of course I had a zoom 75 to 300 mm and did stretch the visual capacity somewhat.  I think I got a couple of good shots though.

I'll let you know.
