Since the filter thread is 43mm have you tried searching for a 43mm lens hood? If Canon does not offer one you could try looking at sites such as B&H Photo or Amazon or the online photo/video retailer of your choice.

Yes, that is what I was thinking I could do. I was also curious if people typically put a lens hood on. I am used to doing that with my DSLRs, but camcorders are new for me.

Yes, people do use lens hoods on camcorders. It definitely helps protect against lens flare. Personally, I think it is a good idea to use one.

I assume also a UV filter would work, right?

Any 43mm filter should work and a UV filter is a good one to have. I would make sure the lens hood will allow you to attach a filter. A polarizing filter and neutral density filters also come in handy.
