Trying to make it so when I record a sporting event, I don't get the commentary from myself or the folks around me...?

One option is to use an external zoom microphone. You might need to get something like the Vello CB-510 Dual Shoe Bracket to have a place to mount the microphone. With the right microphone there should be an option to set to zoom or something else to not pick up sound immediately around you.

Hi Gobeavs1,
Thank you for posting.
When recording music, a play or another event at a distance from the source,I recommend considering a "shotgun" type microphone. This type of microphone has a tighter focus which allows it to "ignore" some of the sound that immediately surrounds you, and pick up sound/ music on the stage.
